“My mom’s job? Oh, my mom shoots horses… with a canon.”

So I’m at a builder event or something like that with my husband and the question eventually comes up, usually from a wife - “so what do you do?” I’m a photographer.” “Oh! I just love weddings”, they exclaim. “Nooooo, I photograph a different kind of heifer. I shoot horses…cutting horses …while they are cutting cows… “ - (Blank stare.) So I try again. “You know, um, during cutting horse shows? “
Well, that’s when the questions really start up and the husbands tune in!
“So what exactly is a cutting horse? Is it a breed, a job, a tragic accident by the vet?”
“What does a cutting horse do?”
“Are they born doing that?”
“Does he do it by himself?”
“Are those REAL cowboys or just weekend warriors?”
“Aren’t you going to get dirty?” (That’s probably my favorite question, honestly).
“Don’t they use helicopters for that? I saw a T.V. show…”

At that point Dan (my husband) usually heads for the food table while he still can! These are the questions I get when I tell people I’m a cutting horse photographer.

So I begin explaining; “Cutting horses were essential to the building of our great nation. You have cowboys, the cowboys have horses, and they work together. They were partners, and are partners, even today. The horses had to be smart, athletic, hardy, and dependable back then. The same holds true today.”

I really enjoy the people in the cutting horse industry. It’s a grand thing to have a man tip his hat to you as he passes, or open a gate for you even though he’s on a horse and you’re on foot. The common courtesy is some of the best to be found on the planet. I love listening to the guys give each other grief in a good natured way when they mess up, but their horse saves the run anyway.

A cutting horse show is a great place to go to renew your faith in mankind in general.

January 4, 2008
Last week I was shooting a cutting horse show in Mississippi. I was in my usual spot down in the cutting pen, freezing to death thanks to an open door close by, and up rides a cowboy with a cup of coffee for me. I was never so grateful to see a hot java, let me tell you! But honestly, just the fact that one of “my riders” was concerned about me being cold certainly warmed me up on the inside! The next thing I know, the arena owner has his guys busy building a wind screen to stop that freezing wind from getting to me. Wow. That’s above and beyond in my book!

I think the biggest surprise to me yet was to see how the cutting horse riders involve their youth. Kids are mentored and valued. I see fathers and sons of all ages (including teenagers!) spending time together and really enjoying each others company. I see cutting horse trainers who charge a LOT of money to train a cutting horse stop what they are doing to help a kid work out a glitch with his or her horse. I’ve even seen these guys lend their very valuable horses to the kids to compete on…just because.

And I, of course, have pictures of all of this!

Who knew there was such a place? I have a million examples of the unique atmosphere in the cutting horse ring. I think that’s why I have enjoyed cutting horse photography as much as I have.

January 10, 2008
Last weekend I shot an event for the Tennessee Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association. It was the Tennessee State Competition, so I got to meet and shoot some first class CMSA competitors. That was a quite an experience! The riders are required to dress in authentic early Western-style clothing. This includes the women. I love seeing the flowing skirts of the gun-toting saloon girls as they go flying by. My great-aunt used to say “Well, honey, you couldn’t see it from a galloping horse” when she meant some detail or imperfection wasn’t worth stressing about. I always think of that when I see these women go zooming by on a running horse!

Now, this was only my second time shooting a CMSA event, and I must say I think it’s much harder than the cutting horse photography. Not only am I attempting to catch the horse (running full out) in the right position, but the rider needs to be the “correct” position, too.
Oh, and then there’s that little detail concerning the burst of flame coming from the gun. Everyone wants that! A split second too soon and you get a picture of someone on a running horse pointing a gun at a balloon, a split second too late and you have a glorious picture of a rider and horse enveloped in smoke. Yikes!

I have been told by the CMSA riders there are photographers who will Photoshop in the flames coming from the gun, but I think that’s just cheating! Where’s the glory in a Photoshop flame? Anyway…

The wedding date is set, and now it’s time to look for your Nashville wedding photographer.  Locating the right wedding photographer, the perfect wedding dress, the most stunning wedding rings are only a small part of the adventure and the excitement of the much anticipated wedding day.  A blessed bride will have friends and family to help her search out  these important wedding items and organize them to perfection. Your wedding day should be a fun and happy event, even though it is very time consuming and filled with details that only the wedding day holds.

We here at Defining Moments Photography feel the wedding photographer should be the least of your wedding day worries!  As your chosen wedding photographer we will be the one person you can really count on to be nowhere and everywhere, see everything and not be seen.  The wedding day jitters are normal, and part of the wonderful process! It’s a commonly know fact though, that it’s easy to lose the finer details of the wedding day in the blur of activity that surrounds the Bride.

It’s always heartwarming as the wedding photographer to see our brides look at their wedding photos and be brought to joyful tears over a memory captured by an opportune photo.  A lifetime of memory-making goes on during the short wedding festivities - it’s up to the discerning wedding photographer to catch those moments and save them for the Bride.

As your wedding photographer of choice, we will provide you with the security of having two cameras and plenty of backup equipment on the scene at all times.. you should expect your photographer and the photographer assistant to be on time, dressed well, non smoker, polite, in command of the situation and easy to work with.

We will get pictures of your DETAILS… the wedding cake,  your wedding dress, your rings, your shoes, your wedding invitations, the wedding party and the wedding decorations.  We will show the wedding guests interacting with each other.  We will strive to capture the emotions and the joy of the day. Candid, unobtrusive  photography is very important…some of these family members and friends will only be in the Nashville area for this one wedding and then never make it back to Nashville again.  Details are everything!

Your wedding package can be chosen from one of our existing packages, or can be tailored to your specific needs.  We can and will be as flexible as you need us to be. You may add or subtract any item you choose to. For example, the wedding festivities on into the night can be included in your wedding package for additional hourly rates.  We can go with you on your honeymoon for a day or two if you so choose…now THAT’S where the ability to blend in and be unobtrusive  really comes in handy as a photographer!  We like to put the honeymoon photography more in the category of wildlife and nature photography…if you aren’t careful you’ll startle your subject and disturb their natural behavior in the wild!

Don’t forget the rehearsal dinner.  We have heard the funniest stories, and had the most magical and memorable moments described to us regarding the toasts and conversations among the wedding party members at this dinner.  The wedding guests are outsiders here…special members only at this event!  We are willing to come and record those moments for you as well.

We will be happy to work closely with your wedding planner to orchestrate the formal photographs. Your wedding planner or coordinator will be your most valuable asset by the end of this hectic day. They know the details that often get overlooked on the road to planning the perfect wedding day. You don’t want to have the wedding day arrive and then suddenly remember the wedding cake hasn’t been picked up! Your wedding planner will be able to provide your out-of-town guests with maps of Nashville, accommodation suggestions, entertaining things to while they are here, etc.

Nashville is a great place to have a wedding! Historic churches, majestic gardens, towering trees and chapels are all wedding favorites and a Nashville wedding photographers dream. Here you will find natural light and stained glass, antique wood and atmosphere galore.  We have wedding chapels which are non secular and beautiful. Franklin is a great place to have a wedding too.  The Factory at Franklin has great atmosphere and large halls for dancing and dining. Historic Franklin has Bed and Breakfast venues which are always very popular with honeymooners and out-of-town wedding guests who will be staying in the Nashville area for a few days before and after the wedding festivities.

Thank you for considering Defining Moments Photography in your search for the right Nashville wedding photographer.  If we may be of service to you, or if you would just like to call us with questions please feel free to do so.  This is your special wedding day, and we are here to serve you!
